The University Library caters to the needs of students, lecturers and staff of Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski”, and users who are not members of the staff of the University must register as library readers.

The registration of users is made at the Central University Library. At the beginning of each academic year the first-year students register as Library users. They must have a student’s record book and a photo.

The reader’s card is valid for a calendar year and users can use the library collections and the services offered by the University Library in the reading-rooms of the Central University Library and the 24 branch libraries.

They can borrow for home use literature from the branch libraries only. According to the Instructions for preservation of library collections, the expensive and valuable library materials such as manuscripts, archive materials, incunabula, early Bulgarian printed books, rare publications and reference editions, dissertations and other library materials, received by means of Interlibrary Loans are not given for home use. According to Library specifications, users can be restricted to borrowing other library materials.

The lending period of library materials for home use is 1 month: lecturers can borrow up to 5 volumes; students and staff of Sofia University can borrow up to 3 volumes. The latest literature in the library must be used 3 months in the reading-rooms only, after that they can be borrowed for home use. The head of each branch library can fix the lending period for textbooks.
