The exhibition “The long way of the first Bulgarian novel – 125 years from the publishing of the first edition of “Under the Yoke”


vazov-1.jpgThe exhibition was opened on October 16th, 2019 at the Sofia University Library “St. Kliment Ohridski”. It was attended by the Vice-Rector of Sofia University associated professor Georgi Valchev, associated professor Anna Nikolova – granddaughter of Boris Vazov, professors and employees of Sofia University, a representative of the National Literature Museum – the main curator of the museum “Ivan Vazov” Tsvetina Ivanova, colleagues from the Central Library of Bulgarian Academy of Science and the Sofia University Library.

The director of Sofia University Library associated professor Anna Angelova presented various editions of the timeless and the most famous Bulgarian book and said it is a cultural phenomenon that has no analogue in our literary history. Associated professor Angelova said that the manuscript of the first translation in German in saved in the collections of Sofia University Library and emphasized the role of translators for the dissemination of the novel all over the world. There are presented literary historians and scientists from Sofia University, who made research on Ivan Vazov and his novel “Under the Yoke”: prof. Aleksandar Teodorov-Balan, prof. Mihail Arnaudov, prof. BoyanPenev, prof. Petar Dinekov, prof. Milena Tsaneva et al. In the exhibition can be seen art illustrations from the first editions. The first comic book made on the novel “Under the Yoke” from the French painter Jacque Naretcan be seenas a multimedia presentation.

The Vice-Rector of Sofia University associated professor Georgi Valchev thanked for the dedicated work of the team of Sofia University Library and mentioned the tradition of the library to be celebrated various anniversaries of Bulgarian literature and history events. Associated professor Valchevemphasized the fate of the first Bulgarian novel, of its charge and magic of the Bulgarian society at the eve of Liberation, presented by Vazov with understandable language for the European readers. He talked about the first edition, published by the English publisher “Heinemann” in a series, where are presented great European writers as well as about the many editions of the novel during the years. According to his words, generation after generation will discover the messages, which Vazov encoded in his work.

Associated Professor Anna Nikolova – a relative of Ivan Vazov, a long-term professor in the Faculty of Classical and Modern Philology, presented her private point of view about the novel in an emotional story combining literary history and family legends. 
 
The exhibition will be opened until November 20th, 2019.
