"The First Seven Professors" - exhibition, dedicated to the 130th anniversary of the founding of Alma mater

plakat-sedmoch.jpgAt the Sofia University Library was opened the exhibition "The First Seven Professors", dedicated to Alexander Teodorov-Balan, Lubomir Miletich, Ivan Georgov, Stanimir Stanimirov, Yosif Kovachev, Nikola Mihailovski and Ivan Danev, lecturers in the first year of the Higher Pedagogical Course and founders of certain scientific disciplines. With this exposition Sofia University Library started a series of initiatives, organized on the occasion of the 130th anniversary of the foundation of the Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski”.

The opening of the exhibition was attended by the Deputy Rector of Sofia University Assoc. Prof. Georgi Valchev, the Dean of the History Faculty Assoc. Prof. Todor Popnedelev, the Director of Sofia University Library "St. Kliment Ohridski" Assoc. Prof. Anna Angelova, the Director of the Sofia University Museum Dr. Simeon Hinkovski, lecturers, students, employees of Sofia University "St. Kliment Ohridski".

The Dean of the Faculty of History Assoc. Prof. Todor Popnedelev described the exhibition as a respect and admiration for the founder’s work: "To those who have created what Bulgaria expected and had hoped for and relied on, we should bow. These are people wishing to build a society, with the desire to develop Bulgaria and Bulgarian science, to establish the principles enshrined in the Turnovo Constitution for the independence of our society in all spheres."

The exhibition, dedicated to the builders of the Higher School, follows several lines. The first line presents a part of the scientific1aaa.jpg and literary heritage of the first builders - works in the field of Bulgarian and Slavic philology, philosophy and pedagogy, political and cultural history as well as classical and new languages. The visitors also have the opportunity to see a manuscript of the lectures of the first Rector Alexander Teodorov-Balan, the manuscript of the book by Stanimir Stanimirov "The History of the Bachkovo Monastery", which the author gave to Patriarch Cyril.

The other line of the exhibition is very interesting and presents documents and materials from the Sofia University Museum. The Director of the museum Dr. Simeon Hinkovski has pointed out, that this exhibition shows for first time the original letter of Konstantin Irechek to Nicola Lazarov, chief inspector of the state schools at the Ministry of National Education, written in response of the invitation to be one of the lecturers in the Pedagogical course.

2aaa.jpgFor the third line of the exhibition Assoc. Prof. Anna Angelova noted that the unifying thread is the connection between the beginning of the Alma mater and the Sofia University Library. In 1888, when the foundations of the Bulgarian Higher School were laid, the stone that was built in its building was the Sofia University Library. The first Rector Alexander Teodorov-Balan is the founder of the Sofia University Library and his first librarian is Prof. Lubomir Miletich. This is the reason why the organizers paid attention to the 155th anniversary of the birth of Prof. Lubomir Miletich, the first librarian of the Higher School, and to show for the first time books with autographs and inscriptions from his personal library. She emphasised that with the works of the library were also occupied Yosif Kovachev and Ivan Georgov. "This first pleiad of university lecturers is closely related to the development, laying the foundation and development of Sofia University Library."

The Deputy Rector of the University Assoc. Prof. Valchev also congratulated his colleagues on the exhibition and emphasised that it reminds us that the University - these are the generations of employees and teachers who built it, the whole huge college, which over the years gave everything from itself to be today the University of Bulgaria.
